KELSEYVILLE- The Cardinals of Clear Lake High will be gunning to dethrone the defending Bass Bowl Champion Kelseyville High Knights Friday night starting at 7:30pm at Kelseyville High School Stadium in the ninth annual Bass Bowl. Kelseyville leads the series 6 to 2, winning the last 5 in a row, including last years 42 -21 beat down, and it does not look promising for the visiting Cardinals this year. They won their second game of the season last week against Lower Lake, making their record 2-7 overall, and 2-4 in league. The home team Knights bring a 8-1 record, winning 8 games in a row, and have secured the league championship regardless of the outcome of the this years Bass Bowl, putting this years team in position to claim to be one of Kelseyville’s all time best team. So while this game will be for bragging rights and possibly playoff seeding for Kelseyville, Clear Lake has a chance to still spoil a chance at glory for the Knights with a strong performance. As history often has proved, when there is a rivalry as intense as there is between these two schools, all bets are off.
The Bass Bowl Trophy will be brought to the game by the Knights, and it will go home with the winning team. It has resided at Kelseyville High for the last 5 years. The trophy sits on a totem pole that has the team mascots carved into it. The scores of every Bass Bowl is plated onto the trophy itself.
The Bass Bowl was recognized in the “Dirty 30: America’s 30 Greatest High School Rivalries” by Tom Ward. The section on the Bass Bowl is entitles “Kiss My Bass”, of which the author acknowledges as one of the books best chapters.
Fans of both schools are encouraged to attend and where their team colors: Black and Cardinal Red for the Cardinals, and Black and Orange for the Knights.
Due to concerns by both schools, there will be no Civil War cannon firing after every score, a signature of past Bass Bowls.
